Jose Mourinho has ruled out a return to Real Madrid, insisting that his sole focus is on honouring his contract with Manchester United.

As reported by Daily Mail, Jose Mourinho has quashed widespread rumours that have been linking him with a possible return to Real Madrid. Mourinho’s own future at Manchester United has been uncertain, even while he is being speculated to be an option to replace Julen Lopetegui.

It was always going to be tough for Real Madrid to match up to the lofty standards set during the reign of Zinedine Zidane. Add to that the shock departure of Cristiano Ronaldo, and it was a double blow that theoretically set Los Blancos back enormously.

However, in the initial days under the tutelage of Julen Lopetegui, who succeeded Zidane, it looked like Real Madrid had found a smooth way to complete the transition. The optimism though, has petered out just as quickly, with their campaign going pear shaped considerably.

In fact, the last time Real Madrid managed to win a game was more than a month ago. Unsurprisingly so, the poor run of results has put Lopetegui under the scanner, with widespread speculation of an impending sacking running rampant. Among those who have been linked with his job is Jose Mourinho.

Mourinho previously managed Real Madrid from 2010-2013 in a stint that created history but also ended in acrimonious fashion. But, at a time when his own future at Manchester United is uncertain, he could get the opportunity to return to a club where he has enjoyed a lot of success.

Mourinho though, has shown in recent weeks that he is willing to fight Manchester United out of their slump. And, the 55-year-old has insisted that he is not paying any attention to the rumours linking him with a return to Real Madrid, and that he intends to complete the duration of his contract at Old Trafford.

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s Champions League encounter with Juventus, Mourinho said, “My future is here. I have a contract and until the final days of my contract I only think about Manchester United. I would like to stay after my contract runs out as well.”

Mourinho’s comments should all but end speculation linking him with a return to Real Madrid, while also solidifying his position at Manchester United, where he still has more than 18 months remaining on his current deal.

The Portuguese thus, continues focusing on steadying the ship at Manchester United, who have shown some improvement lately. As far as Real Madrid are concerned, Lopetegui can go about saving his job if he can get his side on a run of positive results, starting with the Champions League tie against Viktoria Plzen on Tuesday.
