Mauricio Pochettino has reportedly held talks with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez at the Best FIFA awards earlier this week
According to a report by Daily Mirror, who have cited Spanish publication Marca, Mauricio Pochettino met with Real Madrid president Florentino Perez at the Best FIFA awards earlier this week. The nature of the meeting though, was only friendly in nature, as per the report.
Pochettino has risen in stature considerably since joining Tottenham from Southampton in 2014. Not only has the Argentine established himself as one of the most highly regarded managers in the world, but he has also helped transform Spurs into genuine Premier League contenders.
In recent years, Tottenham have also made significant progress in the Champions League. As a result, Pochettino is rated as one of the finest on offer from Premier League football. Unsurprisingly, his advent has attracted several clubs in recent years, the most prominent among them being Real Madrid.
Real Madrid had, in fact, hotly pursued Pochettino this past summer, after Zinedine Zidane had called it quits. But, the Argentine remained firmly committed to the Premier League heavyweights, which prompted Los Blancos to look elsewhere.
In the end, Real Madrid ended up appointing Julen Lopetegui as Zidane’s successor, and the latest era in their history has started on a cautious note. While they lost in the UEFA Super Cup tie with Atletico Madrid, the Spanish giants look like contenders for the La Liga title once again.
But, Real Madrid might just be planning for life after Lopetegui, even if it is unlikely to happen in the foreseeable future. President Florentino Perez met Pochettino at the Best FIFA awards earlier this week, and while the nature of the meeting was friendly, the interest in the Premier League hotshot cannot be denied.
For now, Pochettino is admittedly happy at Tottenham, with his future at the North London club firmly secure following the five-year extension he signed with the Premier League heavyweights in May. Real Madrid, too, would be happy with the progress being made under Lopetegui, although Pochettino could well be his replacement in the future.
