Manchester United are reportedly weighing up a shock move to sign Arsenal superstar Mesut Ozil in the January transfer window.
According to an exclusive report by Daily Express, Mesut Ozil is a shock target for Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window. The Germany playmaker is facing an uncertain future at Arsenal, with widespread reports suggesting a possible rift between him and manager Unai Emery.
Ozil has been a polarizing figure ever since he first moved to the Premier League in the summer of 2013. Over the last five years, the 29-year-old has been one of the most pivotal figures for Arsenal, although a record of 38 goals and 71 assists doesn’t exactly suggest so.
With Unai Emery taking charge at Emirates though, it hasn’t exactly been smooth sailing for Ozil, with certain reports also claiming that he has had a bust-up with the Arsenal boss. Unsurprisingly, the rumour mill has linked the player with a possible Arsenal exit, with Manchester United being his latest suitors.
The interest from the Red Devils is not new, with Jose Mourinho being a huge admirer of the Arsenal superstar. In fact, the Manchester United manager had been eager to secure the services of Ozil last year as well in a bid to beef up the creative options within his squad.
However, the German playmaker chose to remain loyal to Arsenal, signing a £350,000-a-week contract to commit his long-term future to the Gunners. But, with a possible rift with Emery putting his future at Emirates under a cloud, Manchester United are pondering a move in the January transfer window.
With Juan Mata becoming a bit-part player and Paul Pogba far from his best, Ozil’s addition could boost the creativity in the final third for Manchester United. The player’s addition could perhaps, spark an Alexis Sanchez resurgence as well, with the Chilean struggling to dominate games like he did at Arsenal.
Ozil and Emery though, have denied any bust-up, with the player also suggesting a return to form after scoring the winner for Arsenal in their 2-1 win over Newcastle United. But, if he fails to return to his best in the coming weeks, the rumours of a possible move will only gather more steam.
For now, it looks like Ozil is not headed anywhere, especially not in the January transfer window. But, it remains to be seen if Manchester United go on to test Arsenal’s resolve in the winter, or if they choose to not launch the offensive for the 29-year-old.
