The Liverpool captain has penned a new five-year deal with the club and extends his stay at the Merseysiders until 2023.

Liverpool have announced that club captain Jordan Henderson has signed a new deal with the club which will ensure he stays at the Merseysiders at least until 2023. The new contract comes after Henderson turned out for the Reds in impressive fashion over the last few seasons, especially after helping Liverpool reach last season’s Champions League final as well as the World Cup semi-finals with England in the summer.

The 28-year-old Henderson has been a mainstay in the Liverpool setup since arriving from boyhood club Sunderland in 2011 for nearly £20 million. Henderson has made 283 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, scoring 24 goals in the process. The new contract will take his tenure at the club well beyond the decade mark.

Jurgen Klopp views the player as an essential cog to his setup at Liverpool and will be reliant on his captain’s performances for all throughout the season across four competitions. The German manager said, “Jordan embodies entirely what it means to be a Liverpool player in this modern era of football. You can tell through his actions on and off the pitch he treats representing our badge and our shirt as a privilege.”

“He takes nothing for granted and strives to learn and be better for his team at all times.” he added.

That apart, Henderson too was delighted with his signing of a new contract and stated that he would like to finish his career at Liverpool if everything went to plan, having already spent the better part of the last seven years at the club.

Henderson, speaking to the club’s official website after the signing said, “It didn’t seem like too long ago when I signed my first one – it feels like yesterday, really – but a lot has happened since then.”

“I feel it’s been a progressive journey for me throughout my time here and one I’ve enjoyed so much. There is no other place in the world I would rather play football. I want to be here for as long as I can be.”

Liverpool top the Premier League table after winning all of their opening four games, ensuring the club’s best start since 1990-91. The club have already retained all of their most important players from last season, and with Henderson, they have secured the future of their captain, and a player who they believe is the leader of this side.

But during the summer’s outlay on other central midfielders such as Fabinho from Monaco and Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, there were suggestions that these arrivals could put Henderson’s future in doubt. But so far that has not been the case, and Klopp looking adept at giving each player ample playing time, except for Fabinho who is yet to make his debut.

Overall, with Henderson signing a new contract and Salah signing one earlier in the summer, it shows the club’s ambition for the future. Retaining their present stars for the future will also send a strong message to rivals who might have been dreaming of signing one of them, but Liverpool are a club on the rise, and their management of players shows that.
