Bayern Munich are reportedly weighing up the possibility of signing Toby Alderweireld, who was also a summer target for Manchester United.

According to a report by TransferMarketWeb, Toby Alderweireld is now the subject of interest from Bayern Munich, who could see Jerome Boateng depart for PSG. The Tottenham defender had also been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United, who ran out of time to secure his services.

Alderweireld’s future has been speculated upon all through the summer transfer window, with the player unwilling to put pen to paper on a new deal. His current contract at Tottenham just has one year left, although Spurs do have the option of extending it by a further twelve months.

The big bone of contention though, is that the Belgian international will be available for a meagre £25 million upon the extension being triggered. Tottenham have thus, been open to selling Alderweireld, who is reportedly eager to leave as well. His uncertain position has piqued the interest of several clubs, none more so than Manchester United, and now Bayern Munich.

The Red Devils were heavily linked with a number of centre-backs, with Jose Mourinho eager to bolster his options at the heart of defence. Alderweireld though, was believed to be the priority target for the Manchester United boss.

Manchester United even lodged an eleventh hour bid for the Belgian internaitonal, but failed to reach an agreement with Tottenham over the transfer fee. In the end, the Premier League heavyweights ran out of time to land Alderweireld, which has propelled Bayern Munich into the lead in the race to sign him.

Die Roten boss Niko Kovac currently have just three centre-backs in Mats Hummels, Niklas Sule and Jerome Boateng. While the Bayern Munich manager already is running thin on options at the heart of defence, the uncertain future of Boateng, who was also linked with a move to Manchester United, will be a bit of a concern.

The German international has been heavily linked with a move to PSG, which is keeping Bayern Munich on their toes. Whether the French champions are still interested remains to be seen, after they signed Thilo Kehrer this week. Irrespective of Boateng’s future though, Alderweireld will be a top signing for the Bundesliga heavyweights.

However, just as Manchester United found, Bayern Munich could have a tough time persuading Tottenham to sell, especially with the summer transfer window now shut in England. Spurs are in a similar predicament as Die Roten, and it looks likely that Alderweireld will stay put.

Alderweireld is still likely to end up leaving Tottenham, albeit in January at the earliest. For now, he is expected to stay put at the North London club, putting paid to Bayern Munich’s hopes of signing him.
