Leicester City are reportedly inching close to agreeing a new deal with Harry Maguire, who was a target for Manchester United this summer.

According to a report by Daily Mail, Harry Maguire is set to sign a bumper new deal with Leicester City, who are willing to hike his wages from £45,000 per week to £75,000 per week. The English international was the subject of interest from Manchester United this summer.

Maguire has the world at his feet following the twelve best months of his career. At club level, the 25-year-old was a standout for Leicester City, who rewarded him with the Player of the Year award for last season. He then followed it up with stunning exploits at the 2018 FIFA World Cup, which saw him become a hot property in the market this summer.

The English international was hotly pursued by Manchester United for much of the summer transfer window, with Jose Mourinho eager to fortify his defence. In fact, Maguire was one of several centre-backs that were linked with the Premier League heavyweights, although the frenzied search bore no fruits.

Maguire, with his ability to carry the ball from the back as well as his aerial prowess, could have been a solid addition at Manchester United. The player had even hinted towards a possible exit from Leicester. But, the Foxes were adamant that they won’t sell, despite reports that a possible world record bid could be on offer.

In the end, a move failed to materialise as Maguire chose to stay put at Leicester, even turning out for them in the Premier League season opener against Manchester United last week. But, the Foxes are not resting easy just yet, as they are now eager to tie the English international down to a new deal.

Leicester have tabled a new deal worth £75,000 per week, even though he still has four years left to run on his current deal. And, the report suggests that Maguire is ready to pledge his loyalty to the club by putting pen to paper, which would effectively end Manchester United’s hopes of signing him in the near future.

With Maguire likely to continue at the King Power Stadium for the foreseeable future, Manchester United would be lamenting the fact that they declined the chance to sign him for just £15 million last summer.

Leicester, on the other hand, seem well placed to tie another big name player down to a long-term deal after Jamie Vardy committed his future to the club as well.
