Liverpool would reportedly be able to reserve the arrival of Christian Pulisic next year, if he does not agree a new deal with Borussia Dortmund.
According to Bundesliga expert Raphael Honigstein, as reported by Daily Mirror, Liverpool could repeat a Naby Keita-like deal for Christian Pulisic, if the player does not agree on a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund. The German outfit risk losing the United States prodigy on the cheap next summer, when he will have just one year left on his current contract.
Pulisic has created a reputation around his prodigious talent ever since breaking into the first-team setup at Borussia Dortmund in 2016. The 19-year-old player exploited his opposition with his impressive exhibits as he bagged 7 goals and 5 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions last season.
Since his arrival, the player has grown leaps and bounds. While there is still a lot of room for improvement in his game, his potential has interested some of the biggest clubs in the world. Liverpool are one such club that has been in his pursuit of the for quite a while now.
Liverpool’s failure to land Nabil Fekir from Lyon could have renewed their interest towards Pulisic. The 19-year-old’s exploits in Dortmund’s recent friendly against the Reds could have also helped reignite the pursuit. Thus, a potential move for the USA international has been talked up this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to add to his attacking options.
Speculation has ramped up amid further claims that the 19-year-old is hesitant to extend his stay at the Signal Iduna Park beyond 2020. Adding to it, Die Borussen are reluctant to let Pulisic run down his contract but wish to keep his services for the upcoming season. Thus, they would be compelled to sell him in the market if the player doesn’t agree to a new contract, providing boost to Liverpool.
Liverpool would thus, view themselves at the forefront to repeat a Naby Keita-like acquisition, who agreed to sign for the Reds from RB Leipzig last summer. If things go their way, the Reds could successfully negotiate with Borussia Dortmund this year to reserve the arrival of the player for next summer’s transfer window. Borussia Dortmund’s asking price though, is still unknown.
However, Pulisic’s interest in Liverpool is still unexplored and he could also prefer a move to Chelsea, who are weighing up a move for the 19-year-old as well. Pulisic seems to be a viable target for the West Londoners, who could lose some prominent players before the start of the 2018-19 season.
But, as of now, Liverpool seem to be inching closer to seal the long-term services of Pulisic this year, with his stint at Anfield beginning in 2019. Now, it remains to be seen if and when these two clubs enter into the negotiations to complete a deal.
