Everton are reportedly hoping to finally end their pursuit of a centre-back, as they look to sign Marcos Rojo from Manchester United in a £30 million deal

According to a report by The Sun, Marcos Rojo is now the subject of interest from Everton, who are plotting a £30 million bid to sign the Argentine international before the transfer window slams shut. The 28-year-old has been told he can leave Manchester United, who are also looking for a centre-back.

Rojo’s time at Manchester United has been a mixed bag. While the player was often seen as a backup option in his first two seasons at Old Trafford, he enjoyed a rise in stature under Jose Mourinho, making 41 appearances across all competitions in the 2016-17 season before a knee injury brought his campaign to a premature end.

The injury also heavily affected Rojo’s participation last season, with the 28-year-old only appearing 12 times. Naturally enough, he has fallen down the pecking order at Manchester United, who are now open to selling the Argentine international.

The reason Rojo is on the chopping block at Manchester United is their pursuit of a top class centre-back for the third successive summer window. But, in order to make way for a new defender, one will have to be sacrificed, leaving Rojo as the first-choice in the list. But, there is no dearth of interest in the player.

Wolverhampton Wanderers were recently linked with a late move for Rojo. But, with Wolves turning their attention towards Yerry Mina now, Everton have emerged as the front-runners to land the Manchester United defender.

The Toffees are primed to spend heavily in the last few days of the summer transfer window, with defensive reinforcements being their primary objective. At the heart of the Everton defence, there are major issues that need resolving. Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams are both on the wrong side of 30, and slowing down at an alarming rate.

To make matters worse, former Manchester United defender Michael Keane has struggled to settle down since his move from Burnley last summer. Thus, investing in Rojo could be the right way forwards for Everton, who will have an experienced, quick Premier League defender in their ranks in the Argentine.

With that in mind, Everton are set to table a £30 million bid for Rojo, which is likely to be quickly accepted by Manchester United. The Toffees are also eager to sign Yerry Mina. But, landing the Colombian centre-back will prove to be tough, with the Red Devils among the many clubs vying for his signature.

One step at a time though, and it looks like Rojo could be close to sealing a move to Everton, where he can quickly establish himself as a first-choice centre-back. Manchester United though, will hope his sale can be filled by one of their targets well in time before the August 9 deadline.
