Transfer Rumour: Loris Karius a surprise summer target for Bayern Munich

Loris Karius is reportedly a shock summer target for Bayern Munich, who are plotting a €12 million summer move for the Liverpool goalkeeper.

According to a report by Spanish publication Don Balon, Bayern Munich have set their sights over a move for Loris Karius, and are lining up a €12 million bid for the shot stopper. The German is unlikely to be the first-choice goalkeeper at Liverpool next season upon the arrival of Alisson.

Karius returned to England to join Liverpool in the summer of 2016 with the hopes of being the Pepe Reina successor that the Reds had been craving for since 2014. After a slow start to his stint at Anfield, the German stopper finally seemed to have settled in well, looking every bit the top class first-choice that Jurgen Klopp needed.

But, his twin errors in the UEFA Champions League final have sent Karius into a downward spiral that he has been unable to shrug off during Liverpool’s pre-season matches. Klopp’s hand was thus, forced as he delved into the transfer market before zeroing in Alisson as his next number one. As a result, Karius could be on his way back to Germany, with Bayern Munich interested.

The arrival of the Brazilian international at Anfield is set to put some changes into motion. Danny Ward has already joined, while Simon Mignolet is also being linked with a move away from Liverpool. But, if the report is anything to go by, Karius could also be on his way out of Anfield this summer, with Bayern Munich eyeing a cut-price deal for him.

The interest from Bayern Munich comes as a bit of surprise, though. Manuel Neuer did miss almost the entire 2017-18 season due to a foot injury. But, Sven Ulreich was a fantastic deputy in his absence. So much so, that Neuer’s absence was rarely felt, bar a few moments when Ulreich made some bad howlers.

However, Ulreich has proven himself to be good enough to represent Bayern Munich, and is primed for a big role this season as well, with Neuer being eased back into the side. With Die Roten already boasting two quality goalkeepers, it is hard to see where the Liverpool stopper will fit into the scheme of things.

However, the report claims that the 25-year-old is a suggestion by Juan Bernat, who has heard glowing words about him from Liverpool defender Alberto Moreno. Don Balon further suggest that Bayern Munich are lining up a €12 million bid for Karius.

This a move that looks unlikely to happen. Even if Karius decide to leave Liverpool for a fresh start, it is unlikely to be for Bayern Munich, who already have two top class goalkeepers. Klopp though, will be keen on keeping hold of the German, having insisted that the 25-year-old still has a role at Anfield.
