David de Gea is set to sign a new contract with Manchester United after the World Cup, having agreed a five-year deal, amid interest from Real Madrid.

According to a report by Manchester Evening News, David de Gea is set to extend his stint at Manchester United despite reports of a possible move to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. The Spaniard has agreed a five-year deal with the Premier League heavyweights, which he will likely sign after the World Cup.

De Gea has most recently been in the news for his catastrophic error in Spain’s 3-3 draw with Portugal, but that was only a rare, minor blip in an otherwise extraordinary career that has seen him become one of the best goalkeepers in the world over his seven-year spell at Manchester United.

This past season was also the most fruitful on a personal level for de Gea, who won the Premier League Golden Glove, having kept 18 clean sheets in 37 outings. Another outstanding season with Manchester United has unsurprisingly shined the spotlight on him once again, with Real Madrid reportedly back in the hunt for him.

With the Julen Lopetegui era underway at the Bernabeu, a squad revamp is set to take place this summer, with several areas being prioritised for reinforcements. One such position is the goalkeeper’s slot, with Kiko Casilla set to be offloaded and current Real Madrid No. 1 Keylor Navas likely to become second-choice next season.

While the likes of Alisson, Thibaut Courtois and Gianluigi Donnarumma have been linked with a move to Real Madrid, de Gea is believed to be the priority target, with Florentino Perez reportedly plotting a £100 million bid for the Manchester United No. 1.

That de Gea was coy on his future in a recent interview where he refused to rule out a move to Real Madrid would have only given Los Blancos more impetus to pursue a move for him, couple with the fact that the Manchester United superstar shares a fantastic relationship with Lopetegui since their days as player and manager in the Spain Under-21 side.

However, Manchester United are understandably unwilling to part ways with someone who has been named their Player of the Year in three of the last four seasons. Instead, their priority is to tie de Gea down to a new deal that will make him one of the highest-paid players at the club, which they seem to have succeeded in.

The report suggests that Manchester United were going to trigger a one-year option in de Gea’s contract anyway, but have now agreed a new five-year deal with him that should well and truly end talks of a possible move to Real Madrid.

Real Madrid’s interest in de Gea is all too well known, having nearly secured his services in the summer of 2015, before the move failed to materialise in the wee hours of the transfer window. It now looks like their wait to land the 27-year-old away will extend indefinitely, with the player set to commit his future to Manchester United.
