Transfer News: Mario Gotze open to Liverpool move

German World Cup winner Mario Gotze could be open to a future move to Liverpool and has admitted he would like to work with Jurgen Klopp again.

Former Bayern Munich attacker, Mario Gotze has hinted he could be open to a move to Liverpool after admitting Jurgen Klopp’s interest in him. As reported by Tribal Football, the World Cup winner could still be open to a move to Anfield in the future if his former boss comes calling for his services.

Since scoring the World Cup winning goal back in 2014, Gotze has had a topsy turvy career. Injuries and health issues have played a significant role in his overall lack of development. In recent months, due to a lack of first-team action at Borussia Dortmund, many expect the German to move to a new club and probably resurrect his fledgling career.

After a successful period at Dortmund previously, Gotze earned his high profile move to Bundesliga rivals, Bayern Munich back in 2013. But, he failed to live up to expectations from him at the Bavarians. After three difficult seasons at the Allianz Arena, Gotze made his return back to Dortmund before the start of the 2016-17 season.

He displayed some of his old form since re-signing for Dortmund, but got diagnosed with a rare medical condition back in January 2017, putting his next appearance off indefinitely. Gotze has since returned from and featured 32 times for his club in the 2017-18 season.

However, the Germany international has been linked with a move away from Dortmund and naturally connected with a switch to Liverpool, managed by his former boss Jurgen Klopp. Despite the Reds tracking and closing in on signings such as Lyon’s Nabil Fekir, who plays in a similar position to Gotze, the transfer links for the German persist.

Gotze, however, has admitted that he could be interested in a reunion with Klopp, stating “Liverpool are always an option” while also suggesting that the Anfield club were interested in him before he chose to re-sign with Dortmund. At only 26, Gotze feels anything could happen in the future, including a switch to Liverpool.

“I decided to leave Bayern and Jurgen Klopp was interested in getting me to Liverpool. And I was also interested in working with him again, It’s still existing. He is a world-class coach and that’s why it’s always an option. I decided to join Borussia Dortmund, but it was not a decision against Liverpool or Jurgen Klopp. But on the contrary.”

Gotze was also previously linked as a direct replacement for Philippe Coutinho last summer when the Brazilian’s future had been up in the air before he eventually joined Barcelona in January. However, since Coutinho found a way out of Anfield, Liverpool haven’t found a proper replacement for the playmaker.

There have been a few developments at Liverpool and their transfer business. The club looked like they were on a roll after completing a move for Fabinho from Monaco and were on the verge of a sensational coup for Nabil Fekir from Lyon. Negotiations have, however, broken down and Lyon have confirmed the move is off.

This development could mean Liverpool may turn their heads towards Gotze and possibly sign him as an alternative to Fekir. Gotze’s form, however, is not at the same level as Fekir’s, but Klopp could turn it around as he and others know the talent still exists in the player who was once known as German football’s Golden Boy.
