Real Madrid are reportedly still interested in signing Timo Werner, who looks set to leave RB Leipzig this summer.
According to a report by TransferMarketWeb, Real Madrid have retained an interest in signing Timo Werner in the summer transfer window. The German striker looks set to depart from RB Leipzig, who will be willing to sell the player for around €55 million.
Werner has seen his career go on a steady upward trajectory ever since he joined RB Leipzig from boyhood club Vfb Stuttgart in the summer of 2015. From a promising winger to a deadly striker, his transformation at the Red Bull Arena has been career defining, with most of the credit going to Ralph Hasenhuttl, who had the vision to deploy him in an unfamiliar role.
His advent at the club level has also helped Werner cement his place in the German National Side, and he is set to be a key figure for Joachim Low at this summer’s World Cup. In 77 appearances for Leipzig, the player has bagged 42 goals and 17 assists to become a force to be reckoned with in Bundesliga.
His stupendous rise has unsurprisingly alerted several prominent names in Europe, with the likes of Liverpool, Manchester United and Bayern Munich showing an interest in signing him. But, Real Madrid seem to be the front-runners in his pursuit, as they look to revamp their squad upon Zinedine Zidane’s departure earlier this week.
Los Blancos did score a lot of goals this past season, but consistency was one aspect where they lagged, with Cristiano Ronaldo often being bereft of support. That only four players scored in double figures in the entire season is testament to the same, making attacking reinforcement an urgent need for Real Madrid.
In particular, Real Madrid need someone to succeed Karim Benzema, who has been on a downward spiral for two seasons now, only rediscovering his form late into the season. The French striker could even be moved on this summer, which further makes Werner a viable target.
Werner had initially pledged his loyalty to Leipzig to put speculation around his future to bed, but his latest comments have sought to bring the rumour mill back into action. The 22-year-old claimed that he will have to leave the Bundesliga outfit to become world-class, which should give Real Madrid the required impetus.
But, Los Blancos will need to move swiftly if they are serious about signing as Bayern Munich could soon rival them, with Robert Lewandowski’s future up in the air. Real Madrid will also have to be wary about possible interest from Liverpool and Manchester United as Werner has previously claimed that it is his dream to play in the Premier League.
For now though, Real Madrid are leading the race to sign the player, and are unlikely to scoff at his €55 million valuation. It now remains to be seen if the European champions can swoop Werner away from Leipzig, but this looks like a deal that could see the light of the day.
