Andrew Robertson eager for dream Champions League final meeting with Real Madrid

Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has iterated his desire to play in a dream Champions League final against Real Madrid next month.

As reported by Daily Mail, Andrew Robertson has claimed that it would be a dream come true to feature in the UEFA Champions League final against Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid in Kiev next month. Liverpool have been drawn against semi-final and face a trick two-legged tie before they can think of the final.

The Reds have been on a tear since the knockout stages of the Champions League began in February. Liverpool first cruised to a 5-0 aggregate win over FC Porto in the Round of 16, before beating Premier League rivals Manchester City in both legs, with an aggregate scoreline of 5-1 in the quarter-finals.

Real Madrid, too, have been mighty impressive since the group stage ended with a second placed finish behind Tottenham. In the Last 16 stage, Los Blancos saw off PSG before narrowly beating Juventus 4-3 in the quarter-finals – a tie that became shrouded in controversy in its latter stages.

Liverpool have now been drawn against AS Roma, who humbled Barcelona in the quarter-finals, while Real Madrid will meet Bayern Munich in the semi-finals. But, a certain Andrew Robertson is already getting excited about a possible final against Los Blancos, and for a very special reason.

The Scottish defender, who was raised in Glasgow claims his first memory of a Champions League final is from the 2002 edition, which was played in Hampden Park. The tie featured Real Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, with current manager Zinedine Zidane scoring one of the most memorable goals in the history of the competition.

“That was probably the first final (2002) I remember. As a kid you watch these incredible matches and want to play in them. I watched that final at home and remember Zidane’s unbelievable volley.”

But, the Liverpool left-back also went on to add it’s one step at a time for the Reds, who are unlikely to have an easy going against a side that clawed its way back from a three-goal deficit in the quarter-finals, iterating the importance of a win over AS Roma at Stadio Olimpico.

“We heard the Roma score on the way to the dressing-room. We hadn’t even got into the changing room. Roma are an unbelievable side and the away goal was crucial for them. They nicked it and they nicked it when they were 3-0 down in Barcelona (they ended up losing 4-1) and maybe they thought the tie was over.

‘The Stadio Olimpico is not an easy place to go. They went and turned over an unbelievable side 3-0 and they deserve to be in the semi-finals.”

Indeed, the first leg against AS Roma next week will shape the rest of Liverpool’s campaign in the Champions League. But, one thing is certain. Robertson would love to feature in the final of Europe’s premier club competition against Real Madrid at Kiev in a month’s time.
