Denmark and Chile ended the international break on a drab note as the two sides played out a goalless draw at the Nordjyske Arena on Tuesday.
Denmark looked to close out the final international break of the season with a friendly win over Chile, who had won the only previous meeting between the two sides. But, the match ended up being a largely scrappy affair with chances coming few and far between for both sides on the night.
It was the visitors who grabbed the early foothold in the match, with Enzo Roco’s header being saved by Kasper Schmeichel with ease. Schmeichel then denied Chile once again as he reacted swiftly to top Pablo Hernandez’s powerful header onto the bar before the ball bounced to safety.
Denmark slowly started to find their way back into the game and Christian Eriksen created the first big opening for the hosts in the 19th minute, but Andreas Cornelius couldn’t convert it, shooting high and wide. The game slowly started to open up bit by bit as both sides carved out a few half chances.
Age Hareide’s men continued to be in the ascendancy, with Johnny Herrera forced into two fantastic saves within a minute, first from Pione Sisto and then from Eriksen as the scores remained level. The final chance of the first half fell to Chile as Nicolas Castillo unleashed a fierce long-range effort that whiskered past the post.
The hosts started the second half the stronger of the two sides as Sisto first shot over the bar before Cornelius looked to put his side into the lead at the end of a sweeping move that saw Eriksen and Nicklas Bendtner link up smartly.
Chile then came close with an effort from Alexis Sanchez, whose shot was saved by Schmeichel. But, La Roja were nearly trailing with 15 minutes left on the clock as Lasse Schone’s curling free-kick beat Herrera only for the post to come in the way of glory.
There weren’t a lot of efforts for the remainder of the match, with both goalkeepers saving a late effort from either side as the match ended goalless.
