Transfer Rumour: Real Madrid eyeing summer move for Edin Dzeko

Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Edin Dzeko, as they step up their efforts to sign a striker in the summer.

According to a report by TransferMarketWeb, Edin Dzeko is the subject of interest from Real Madrid, who are intent on signing a striker in the summer transfer window. The Spanish and European champions have submitted an inquiry to AS Roma for the Bosnian striker, and a move could be on the cards.

Dzeko has resurrected a stuttering career since joining AS Roma from Manchester City in the summer of 2015, initially on loan before making his move permanent in the subsequent summer. And over the last two seasons, the player has transformed into one of the most prolific powerhouses in Europe.

Since making his move to Stadio Olimpico a permanent one, Dzeko has made a direct contribution to a goal in almost every game, on average, with 56 goals and 20 assists in 88 appearances. It is, thus, not surprising to see him attract interest from several clubs, with Real Madrid the latest suitors in his pursuit.

Los Blancos have endured a disappointing season of sorts, apart from their exploits in the Champions League. The problem in domestic competitions has hurt Real Madrid a lot, with Barcelona 15 points ahead of them in La Liga and destined to win the title.

For much of the campaign, Real Madrid struggled to consistently perform in front of goal, with first-choice striker Karim Benzema a pale shadow of his domineering self. The Frenchman has managed to score just four goals in La Liga this season, and it is clear that the Spanish and European champions need to bolster the position.

While Dzeko will be an upgrade over Benzema based on current form, at 32, he will only be a short-term solution, which is why it is slightly surprising that Real Madrid are interested in him. In contrast to Dzeko, the other reported targets are much younger, and can potentially provide them the best years of their career.

Nevertheless, if Real Madrid decide to make a concrete offer for Dzeko, he could be a fine addition to Zidane’s squad, and someone who could be cost effective too. Los Blancos have submitted an official inquiry to AS Roma for the Bosnian international and a deal could certainly be in the offing.

But, it remains to be seen if they go unchallenged in pursuit of the player, with Chelsea previously holding an interest in him. If they do, it’ll be interesting to see if Dzeko ends up making his way to Real Madrid this summer.
