Transfer Rumour: AS Monaco set sights on Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini

Ligue 1 champions AS Monaco have emerged as surprise contenders for Manchester United midfielder Marouane Fellaini’s signature in the summer.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Marouane Fellaini, who has just over three months left on his current contract with Manchester United, is attracting interest from AS Monaco. The French giants have joined the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Turkish side Besiktas, some English sides and even Chinese clubs in the race for his signature.

The report further goes onto state that the Manchester United chiefs couldn’t come to an agreement with the Belgian over the terms of a new contract and that the club were already considering other players they could purchase in the summer to strengthen their midfield.

Such players include the likes of Toni Kroos from Real Madrid, Lazio’s Sergej-Milinkovic-Savic and Jorginho at Napoli, all younger and perhaps better options for Manchester United than the Belgian international, who turns 31 this year and has had a season marred with injury.

AS Monaco, meanwhile, have lost a number of players in recent seasons and other European superpowers are expected to come for more of their 2016/17 title winning personnel in the summer. Fellaini being available for free, with his English and European experience would make him an attractive option.

Since arriving in the summer of 2013, Fellaini has gone on to make over a 150 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions, scoring 19 goals and providing 10 assists. He enjoyed something of a resurgence in form last year under Jose Mourinho, making 47 appearances in all competitions.

But with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Ander Herrera already competing for a position, and youngster Scott McTominay coming in through the ranks, chances would have come few and far in between for Fellaini and a move away from Manchester United seems like a good career decision at this point.

As per the report, he still has a fair few options to choose from including other English clubs and even China. With four trophies in the past four seasons and the possibility of adding another FA Cup, Fellaini will certainly hope that he can leave the club on a high and it will interesting to see where the Belgian goes next.
