Liverpool are reportedly plotting a summer move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner, who is also being tailed by Manchester United.
According to Independent, Liverpool are still willing to chase RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner in the summer, despite the striker’s admission that he intends to stay at the club for atleast the upcoming season. The Reds will find competition in the form of rivals Manchester United.
Timo Werner’s progression has been in line with a fairytale of sorts, the RB Leipzig fairytale – one that caught Bundesliga and Europe by storm. The striker has been at it for the club, with a brilliant record of 17 goals and 5 assists so far this season.
His exploits have brought forth interest from many corners, especially with the player establishing himself within the German national setup as well. Premier League has been one of the main leagues to have shown concrete interest in the youngster, with Liverpool, Manchester United and a few more clubs linked with Werner.
At Liverpool, Jurgen Klopp possesses what is a world-class attacking trio in Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah. While Firmino has done extremely well as a number nine, the manager still lacks a natural striker and depth at the position, which is where Werner comes in.
At 22, Werner will slot right in with what is a young attacking core at Liverpool and can build upon his already burgeoning reputation in world football.
Manchester United though, present a different predicament. Jose Mourinho has, in Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku, two potent natural predators. But, Rashford has been deployed out wide, which has seen Mourinho often strapped for options beyond Lukaku, especially with Zlatan Ibrahimovic struggling to return to full fitness.
Recently, Werner addressed speculation of a move to the Premier League in the future and while he did state that he would like to play for a club as big as Manchester United one day, the 22-year-old fully intends to stay put at Leipzig in the upcoming campaign.
While this does dampen Liverpool and Manchester United’s hopes of convincing Werner to leave Leipzig in the summer, it also highlights that the 22-year-old perhaps, prefers the Red Devils over the Reds.
Liverpool though, are reportedly unperturbed by either prospect and are fully focused on testing Werner and RB Leipzig’s stance on the striker’s availability in the summer. Chances of a move look slim but with Liverpool announcing their return to Europe and as a genuine contender for honours under Klopp, Werner might just be convinced.
