Transfer News: Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez rules out Real Madrid move

Tottenham Hotspur defender Davinson Sanchez has dismissed speculations of a move to Spanish giants Real Madrid in the summer.

Tottenham defender and Colombian international Davinson Sanchez has quashed all rumours of a move to Spanish and European champions Real Madrid at the end of the season, as per a report from the Daily Mirror.

The 21-year old centre-back joined Mauricio Pochettino’s side only this past summer from Dutch club AFC Ajax in a club-record £42.5 million deal. And he has had a widely impressive debut campaign so far, so much so that, he has established himself as the first-choice defender, even after the return of Tottenham mainstay Toby Alderweireld who was out on the sidelines for two months with an injury.

Sanchez, this season, has featured in 28 fixtures across all competitions for the Lilywhites and has played an important role in their campaign. His solid showings at the back had led to interest from Real Madrid, who are reportedly looking to revamp their squad in the summer.

Defence has been a major cause of concern for Zinedine Zidane’s side this term, as they go about trying to ‘defend’ their Spanish and European crowns. Having sold veteran centre-back Pepe in the summer, Los Blancos failed to replace him adequately and have been plagued by issues at the back, with captain Sergio Ramos, Raphael Varane and Nacho all going through poor phases at some point in the season.

A new centre-back is said to be high on the shopping list for Real Madrid in the summer and Sanchez was one of their primary targets, even before he joined Tottenham. However, the Colombian has ruled out any possibility of a move to the Santiago Bernabeu, stating that he is very happy with his current situation in North London, also adding that the lure of money will not have a bearing on his future.

As quoted by the Mirror, he said: “I do not think about money or where it is. Right now, here in Tottenham I am very good. I am playing every three to four days. I am being important in the team.

“As big as Madrid is, no matter how big a team are, that has won what they have won, if the conditions are not favourable for me, unfortunately I cannot accept.”

Interestingly, Real Madrid have also been heavily linked with a move for Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino as well as the club’s star striker Harry Kane over the last year or so. Earlier this month, there were reports of the Los Blancos plotting a swoop for Sanchez’s defensive partner Toby Alderweireld as well.

It is understandable that Real Madrid are monitoring the 21-year old Sanchez given their need for injecting some fresh blood into the backline.

However, one would imagine it is nigh on impossible for the Spanish capital club, even with their unlimited cash reserves, to pry the seven-time capped Colombian international away from North London, given how crucial a player he has become in such a short span of time.
