Manchester United legend David Beckham has been left stunned by Arsenal’s decision to sell Alexis Sanchez to their rivals in the January transfer window
Former Manchester United star and footballing legend David Beckham has said that he still cannot believe that Arsenal allowed Alexis Sanchez to join the Red Devils in the January window, according to the Mirror.
The 29-year old Chilean international moved to the Old Trafford from Arsenal last week, in a deal that saw playmaker Henrikh Mkhitaryan move the other way to the Emirates. It is understood that Sanchez has signed a four-year contract with Manchester United with wages close to a whopping £500,000 per week, making him the highest paid player in the Premier League.
Sanchez has inherited Beckham’s old No.7 shirt at Manchester United, following in the footsteps of some of the club legends like Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona and Cristiano Ronaldo.
And Beckham, speaking to the Mirror, at the launch of his new Miami Major League Soccer team, expressed his surprise at the transfer going through. The former England captain said:
“I still find it hard to believe it’s actually happened. It’s amazing.
“A player of his stature and calibre has obviously come from a big club like Arsenal and then to move to a massive club like Manchester United, that for me makes me proud to be a Manchester United player because we want great players and exciting players.”
Sanchez made his debut for Manchester United in the 4-0 win over Yeovil Town in the fourth round of the FA Cup over the weekend and put on an impressive display, registering two assists on his first appearance for the club.
And Beckham went on to exclaim that the former Arsenal man had what it takes to be a huge success with United.
“It’s great to see him wear a United shirt and I’m sure he’s going to be successful,” the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star added.
The signing of Sanchez from under the noses of neighbours Manchester City was a brilliant move by Jose Mourinho’s team and United fans would now be hoping that the 29-year old will live up to the expectations and carry forward the legacy of the esteemed No.7 jersey, after a series of disappointments.
