Transfer Rumour: Scott McTominay eyed up by host of Championship clubs

Scott McTominay is reportedly being chased by a number of Championship clubs, who want to sign the Scot on a six-month loan deal in January.

According to a report by The Sun, Scott McTominay could leave Manchester United on loan in the winter transfer window. The Scottish midfielder is being targeted by a host of Championship clubs, with Leeds United, Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers showing the most concrete of interests.

McTominay joined the fabled Manchester United youth academy as a six-year-old in 2002, before he gradually progressed through the ranks and established himself in the reserve side. Last season, the player made his surprise debut towards the end of the campaign, with the Red Devils struggling with injuries.

The youngster has continued featuring for the Manchester United Under-23 side in Premier League 2 this season, although he has been a part of several matchday squads for the first-team as well, even making his Champions League debut this season.

His versatility to play centrally in attack and midfield has been a major positive in his rise up the ranks, with Mourinho admittedly a huge admirer of his technical abilities. The Manchester United boss though, is eager to see him develop further by playing regular first-team football elsewhere.

The 21-year-old could, thus, be sent on loan in January to get some vital experience under his belt. With the player likely to be available in the winter transfer window, a host of Championship clubs are scouring the possibility of signing him on a short-term loan deal, with five clubs asking for his availability in January.

Leading the chase for the midfielder are Leeds United, with Preston North End and Bolton Wanderers in his pursuit as well. A move to any of the club could benefit McTominay immensely as he would be able to secure regular game time in a competitive first-team setup.

What could put a spanner in the works for the trio is if Mourinho feels he does not have enough cover in midfield, which would result in McTominay staying put at Old Trafford. Manchester United are being linked with a move for a midfielder in January though, with Carlos Soler among the targets for the club.

Either way, the future seems bright for McTominay – a player who is rated very highly by Jose Mourinho – although it goes without saying that a short-term move away from Old Trafford could do him a world of good.
