Newcastle United are reportedly interested in a January loan deal for Luke Shaw, who is struggling to break into the Manchester United starting lineup

According to a report by Dailly Mirror, Rafael Benitez is ready to offer Luke Shaw a way out of his misery at Manchester United. The Newcastle United boss is plotting a January loan move for the Englishman, who has struggled to break into Jose Mourinho’s side over the last eighteen months.

Shaw had the world at his feet in 2014, when Manchester United shelled out the big bucks to make him the most expensive teenager in the world. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders in the world at the time, the player’s career has gone completely pear-shaped since the switch to Old Trafford.

The 22-year-old has managed to amass a mere 49 appearances in little over three years at the club, and his progress has come to a grinding halt since the arrival of Mourinho. While injuries have hampered his development to a great extent, the Manchester United boss has also questioned Shaw’s attitude and work ethic.

To make matters worse, it seems like the England international’s relationship with Mourinho has soured even more, having made just two appearances from the bench all season. Reports have suggested that Manchester United are ready to send Shaw out on loan, and a Premier League club is now ready to offer him a lifeline.

Rafael Benitez is keen to make improvements to his side after being voicing his displeasure about a lack of summer spending, owing to a modest budget. While he still doesn’t have enough money to sign a top left-back on a permanent deal, a loan deal may be a temporary solution to his problems.

Left-back is an area of concern, with Paul Dummett struggling with injury problems and Javier Manquillo not proving to be consistent enough. Shaw’s talents are undoubted, with the player showing glimpses of what he can do at his best under Louis van Gaal, and a move to St. James’ Park could help resurrect a stuttering career.

Newcastle may not find it easy to sign him though, with Southampton and Tottenham possible suitors as well. With the move dependent on Manchester United’s transfer preference, it now remains to be seen if the Magpies are able to land Shaw in January.
