French defender Raphael Varane has agreed an extension on his current contract with Real Madrid till 2022, the club announced on Wednesday.

Real Madrid have made an official statement to announce that they have reached an agreement with Raphael Varane to extend his current contract with the club. The extension will see the French centre-back remain at Santiago Bernabeu till June 30, 2022.

Varane joined Real Madrid from Lens in the summer of 2011 as a prodigious 18-year-old. Widely regarded as one of the most exciting prospects in the world at back then, the player is well on his way to fulfilling his potential at the Bernabeu.

The Frenchman had to bide his time initially with Pepe and Sergio Ramos forging a strong partnership at the heart of the Real Madrid defence. However, with the Portuguese defender calling time on his career at the club this past summer, Varane has finally succeeded in firmly establishing himself as a mainstay at the back.

Over his six-year long career, Varane has made close to 200 appearances for Los Blancos, while also racking up every major honour at the club level, winning 13 trophies in all including three Champions League and two La Liga triumphs.

His exploits have also made him a popular figure in the transfer market, with some of the most prominent names in European football making a beeline for his signature. Among these, Manchester United have been the most heavily linked club over the years, particularly under Jose Mourinho, who is a huge admirer of the player.

However, the France international has never really looked like departing from the Bernabeu, and has now pledged his long-term future to the club by putting inking the extension on his current deal, that was set to expire in 2020.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid seem to be in the midst of their very own “contract extension window”, with Varane being the sixth player to have signed a new deal at the club this month, after Marcelo, Isco, Dani Carvajal, Karim Benzema and Marcos Llorente.

Securing Varane’s long-term future is another masterstroke by the club, who have looked to lock down all of their important players to new deals and keep them away from the prying eyes of potential suitors.

And Real Madrid supporters would be thrilled at the news of one of their most promising players extending his stay at the Bernabeu for the long-term.
