Chelsea have reportedly cancelled Loic Remy’s contract, allowing the French striker to join La Liga side Las Palmas on a free transfer
According to a report by The Sun, Chelsea have cancelled Loic Remy’s new contract and allowed the striker to join Las Palmas on a free transfer. The move does not come as much of a surprise since Remy was left out of Antonio Conte’s match-day squads for the Blues’ opening two games of this season.
The 30-year-old striker was in the final year of his contract at Chelsea. He did not feature for the club since a 4-0 victory over Aston Villa in April 2016. He did receive a ray of hope when he made the 25-man travelling party for their pre-season tour of China and Singapore, but besides that, he has been sidelined ever since.
Loic Remy joined Chelsea for £10.5 million from QPR back in September 2014, but injuries and a drastic loss of form meant he failed to establish himself at Stamford Bridge. He was a part of the squad that helped Chelsea win the Premier League and EFL Cup, with nine goals and two assists to show for his efforts.
The departure of Didier Drogba almost made it seem like he would have a more prominent role at the club but unfortunately that was not meant to be. The Blues went on to endure a disastrous season, wherein Remy made even fewer appearances than he did in their title winning campaign.
He barely featured for Mourinho and was used even lesser by Guus Hiddink, ending the season with three goals and an assist in 20 appearances. Although he was loaned to Crystal Palace last season, Remy never hit it off there either, making only eight appearances.
Hence, it becomes quite obvious that Remy isn’t a part of Antonio Conte’s plans for the upcoming season, despite the uncertainty surrounding the future of Diego Costa. A move to Las Palmas will not only benefit the striker but also the club since it will free them of a wage bill.
As such, Remy is keen for a fresh challenge and Las Palmas appears to be a good destination for him. He is already 30-years-old and needs to be at a club wherein he can spend the rest of his years playing for glory. Additionally, given his experience, he is likely to excel when he tries his hand at a club abroad.
