Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola has shown keen interest in Espanyol’s young left-back Aaron Martin.
Even after acquiring the most expensive back-line in the world, Pep Guardiola has no intention of putting a halt to his spending spree this summer. As reported by The Sun, the Spaniard is eyeing Espanyol’s young defender Aaron Martin, and Manchester City are all set to throw in a 20 million euro bid for the 20-year old.
However, Espanyol have put a hefty 30million euro termination clause on his contract, and although the youngster has been on Guardiola’s radar for several months, Manchester City are evaluating the worth for the cost.
Martin came through the ranks of Espanyol and managed to turn some heads last season, helping his team to an eighth place finish. Martin also has international experience on his CV, having played for the Spanish Under-19 side two years ago before making his Espanyol debut in 2015.
Manchester City are not the only club to have shown interest in Martin, as the Montmelo-born full back has also caught the eye of Manchester United and Barcelona. Martin is primarily a left-back, but has also played in midfield at times for Espanyol last season.
Kyle Walker, Danilo, and Benjamin Mendy are Guardiola’s other defensive recruits this summer, and Manchester City’s squad already looks like it’s the best in the country. If at all, City could do with another center-back to add to their repertoire, since the full back areas already seem to be well-armored.
Understandably, the Citizens continue to knock on West Bromwich Albion’s door to snag former Manchester United defender Johnny Evans. But should Guardiola sign Aaron Martin, he will have four high-quality fullbacks to choose from – a situation that Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho can only dream of at this point in time, as his left-back conundrum continues.
With Manchester City odds on to win the title this season, Guardiola will want to snap up Martin’s signature as soon as possible, since this will not only add to his artillery, but could also put their city rivals Manchester United in a predicament again.
The transfer window slams shut in under a week, and the title race this season could well be a race between the two Manchester clubs, just as it is to sign young Aaron Martin.
