Wellington Silva has reportedly failed his medical at Bordeaux, and is now on his way back to Fluminense from Arsenal in an embarrassing sequence of events.
According to a report in The Sun, Arsenal have suffered an embarrassment in the transfer window, with Wellington Silva the protagonist of the saga. The Gunners’ gamble of re-signing the Brazilian winger from Fluminense to sell him to Bordeaux has backfired, with the player failing his medical at the club.
Silva rapidly progressed through the ranks at Fluminense before making the senior grade with the Brazilian club in 2009. Widely rated as the next big thing in Brazil back then, Arsenal took no time to snap him up, signing the talented winger in a £3.5 million deal.
However, the player never managed to kick a ball for the Gunners’ first team due to several issues. Silva failed to get a work permit to play in England for almost four years and was sent on several loan spells to clubs in Spain. After receiving his work permit though, poor form meant that he could never make his Arsenal debut.

And so, after another temporary stint away from the Emirates – at Bolton – Silva was on his way back to Brazil, as he rejoined Fluminense in the summer of 2016. The last year has seen him resurrect his career to an extent as he has received regular game time.
In all, Silva has played a total of 20 games for Fluminense since his return to the Maracana. However, a modest return of 3 goals and an assists is hardly a promising sign of progress. Nevertheless, Arsenal decided to bring the player back to North London with the objective of selling him again on a profit.
The Gunners secured the services of Silva in a £1.5 million deal, with the player set to join Bordeaux this summer itself. The Ligue 1 club were willing to shell out £3 million for the 24-year-old, with the deal subject to the completion of a medical.
However, it is at the final juncture where the deal has failed to materialise, with Silva failing his medical at Bordeaux. And now, the player is set to re-sign with Fluminense, in what has become a transfer merry-go-round for him in recent weeks.
Thus, this particular transfer saga has ended on an embarrassing note for Arsenal, and it remains to be seen just how many players follow Silva to depart from the Emirates in the coming days, with several players linked with an exit.
