Manchester United have reportedly turned their attention to Serge Aurier as their quest for a right-back intensifies after failing to secure a deal for Fabinho
According to a report by The Independent, Manchester United are now eyeing a summer deal to sign Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain after struggling to secure a deal for AS Monaco’s Fabinho. Aurier has been linked with United in the past but now it looks like the Red Devils are determined to sign him as an alternative.
Aurier still has two years left on his contract with PSG, but is understood to have a preference to leave the French club this summer and explore options abroad, although he has been offered a new contract.
Although the Ivory Coast international has been a regular for Les Parisiens since his arrival at Parc des Princes, he was forced to share game time with Belgian international Thomas Meunier last season, and he will be interested in moving to a side wherein a similar situation does not happen.
The 24-year-old has pace, power and provides a great attacking threat which will make him one of the most ideal players to man the Manchester United back line if the deal does go through. Signing a quality right-back has been a top priority for Jose Mourinho this summer and Aurier can easily make the cut.
For a long time, Fabinho was United’s top target for the position especially after his scintillating performances last season. The 23-year-old was vital for Monaco, albeit as a midfielder, as they were the surprise winners of the the Ligue 1 title last season, displaying his versatility with his ability to play as a right-back and also a defensive midfielder.
It comes as no surprise that the Red Devils’ pursuit of the talented Brazilian has yielded no results so far since the French champions wouldn’t be too keen on selling another one of their star player after already losing Bernardo Silva and Timeoue Bakayoko.
Hence, with a deal proving difficult to finalize, Manchester United are now seeking alternatives and Aurier is likely to be a player who can gel quickly with the squad.
As far as the financial aspect is concerned, Aurier would be a lot cheaper than Fabinho since the Brazilian’s market price keeps increasing owing to the number of big clubs keen on signing him.
It remains to be seen which right-back Mourinho is able to bring to Old Trafford this summer after already signing Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku.
