Manchester United are reportedly interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain defender Serge Aurier as Jose Mourinho establishes contact with the club to discuss a deal
According to a report by The Sun, Serge Aurier is seeking an exit out of PSG after the arrival of Dani Alves on a free transfer and is expected to join Manchester United this summer.
Jose Mourinho did not face too many problems as far as United’s defence was concerned last season since the Red Devils more or less put up defensively sound performances. However, he did face frustration when most of the defenders underwent injury woes during crucial times of the campaign which led to a below-average season.
The Portuguese boss will be looking to avoid that next season and has already signed Victor Lindelof from Benfica, and as things stand, it seems like Serge Aurier could be next.
Aurier has two years left on his contract with the French giants and is understood to have a preference to leave the Ligue 1 runners-up this season and explore options abroad despite being offered a new contract. In fact, the 24-year-old was once a target for Arsenal when he was preparing to move to PSG from Toulouse back in 2015.
That deal did not go through and Aurier then moved to Paris instead, for £7 million.
Although the Ivory Coast international has been a regular since his arrival, he has been forced to share time with Belgian Thomas Meunier last season. With the arrival of Dani Alves, Aurier is likely to be pushed further below the pecking order and forego regular playing time.
He will be interested in moving to a side wherein a similar situation does not happen, and United could be a good option. Matteo Darmian and Antonio Valencia have been battling it out to secure the right-back position since last season, but Mourinho hasn’t been too pleased with either of them.
This can work in Aurier’s favour since he can put up stronger performances which can help him to cement that position for himself at the Old Trafford club.
Aurier has pace, power and a great attacking threat which will make him one of the most ideal candidates for a side managed by Jose Mourinho. The former Toulouse man is also adept at providing cover going backwards and support when pushing on the front foot, making him a sound addition to the Red Devils’ squad.
