Leicester City could allow Kasper Schmeichel to join Manchester United if they succeed in their pursuit of Lovre Kalinic.

According to a report in The Sun, Manchester United are inching closer in their pursuit of Kasper Schmeichel. Leicester City are seeking a deal for Lovre Kalinic and will allow their number one to make the move to Old Trafford if they are able to land the Gent goalkeeper in the summer transfer window.

Leicester previously played for Manchester United’s city rivals Manchester City, having progressed through the ranks at the club. However, he struggled to establish himself as the first-choice goalkeeper at the Etihad, and after several loan spells, he moved to Notts County in 2009.

A move to Leeds United followed before Schmeichel subsequently joined Leicester City in 2011. Since then, his stock has been on the rise constantly, with the Denmark international playing an instrumental in Leicester’s unprecedented rise in English football.

In fact, Schmeichel played a key role in the Foxes’ shock Premier League title triumph in the 2015/16. And when the tables turned in the recently concluded season, he maintained his consistency levels to be one of the few shining lights in his side.

The 30-year-old, though, is keen to end his time at Leicester this summer to join a bigger club. And there has been no dearth of interest in him, with some of the most prominent clubs registering an interest in signing the shot stopper. But Manchester United have been leading the race to sign Schmeichel for some time now.

The interest from the Red Devils stems from the fact that their first-choice goalkeeper, David De Gea is heavily linked with a summer move to Real Madrid – two years after his transfer to the Santiago Bernabeu was scuppered due to issues with paperwork.

With Los Blancos eager to bring De Gea back to the Spanish capital at all costs this summer, Manchester United have been forced to look for replacements, should their number one leave. Schmeichel has, thus, emerged as a top summer target.

The shot stopper, too, is keen to follow in his father’s footsteps of protecting the goal at Old Trafford, and is reportedly pushing for a summer move. Leicester, however, will only allow the 30-year-old to leave the King Power Stadium if they are able to secure the services of Gent goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic.

While the Foxes’ initial bid fell short of Gent’s asking price, they are confident that they will be able to land the Croatian goalkeeper with their next offer. Should that happen, we could well see Schmeichel make his way to Manchester United this summer, provided De Gea calls it quits at Old Trafford.
