AS Roma have reportedly reignited their interest in Nacho and are plotting a deal to land the Real Madrid defender in the summer.
Italian publication Calciomercato have reported that Spanish defender Nacho is back on the radar of AS Roma. The Serie A club are set to make another move for the Real Madrid defender this summer after they failed to land him last year.
Nacho progressed through the ranks at Real Madrid before making the grade in the senior setup in 2009. The player subsequently spent two seasons with the reserve side before finally earning his stripes with the first team in 2011.
Since then, Nacho has formed a crucial part of the first-team setup at the Santiago Bernabeu, even as he has largely been a squad player for every manager he has played under. In fact, he only notched up his 100th appearance for the side in the 2016/17 season.
The 27-year-old though, enjoyed a larger role in the recently concluded season thanks to injuries and Zinedine Zidane’s rotation policy. As a result, he made 39 appearances in all competitions in the Frenchman’s side, providing a dependable presence at the back while also chipping in with 3 goals.
The player’s time in the Spanish capital, however, could be set to come to an end this summer, with AS Roma keen on signing him. In fact the Giallorossi have held an interest in the Spain international for a long time now, and tried signing last summer as well before Zidane blocked the move.
The Serie A club though, are set to make another move for Nacho with sporting director Monchi an admirer of his talents. The interest in the player, perhaps, also stems from the fact that Roma in a precarious situation with Antonio Rudiger and Kostas Manolas both heavily linked to a summer exit from Stadio Olimpico.
Should either or both the defenders leave this summer, Nacho has all the qualities to be a top notch replacement at the heart of the Roma defence. And at 27, the player can provide the best years of his career to the Italian heavyweights, while finally securing regular first-team football.
Nacho’s ability to play equally adeptly as a centre-back, left-back and right-back also potentially makes him an asset for Roma. It now remains to be seen if the Giallorossi manage to succeed in their pursuit of Nacho this time around or if Zidane opposes the player’s departure yet again.
