Arsenal are reportedly confident of landing Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon this summer in a club-record £44 million deal.

According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Alexandre Lacazette is set to complete his summer move to Arsenal. The Gunners are set to secure the service of the Lyon striker in a £44 million deal which would break the club’s transfer record, currently standing at £42.5 million.

Lacazette has developed considerably since making his first-team debut for boyhood club Lyon in 2010. The player has, in fact, established himself as an instrumental figure in Les Gones‘ first-team squad, having been one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

2016/17 was another productive campaign for Lacazette as he bagged 37 goals and 5 assists in 45 appearances across all competitions for Lyon. And the player’s exploits at the club level have also seen him establish himself as a full-fledged member of the French national side.

His stellar performances for Lyon have also seen him generate interest from some of the top clubs across Europe. In fact, Lacazette looked set to complete a summer move to Atletico Madrid before the club’s ban on transfer activities scuppered the deal.

While Los Rojiblancos may no longer be in the running to sign Lacazette, Arsenal remain interested in signing him and have stormed into the lead to land the player in the summer. The Gunners have struggled to find a reliable goalscorer from their strikers since Robin van Persie left back in 2012.

Olivier Giroud scores his goal at a decent rate but lacks the pace to complement Arsene Wenger’s style of play, while Danny Welbeck has struggled to rack up the minutes having been troubled by a spate of injuries since moving to the Emirates in 2014.

Alexis Sanchez did do exceedingly well as a makeshift striker for large parts of the recently concluded season, the Chilean has played behind the striker in Arsene Wenger’s newly employed system. On top of that, his future at Arsenal is up in the air as well, with widespread reports linking him with a summer exit from the Emirates.

Lacazette has, thus, been identified as a top target and his pacy outlet and strong build make him an ideal striker for Wenger’s side. And Arsenal believe that they have clinched the player’s transfer by tabling a club-record £44 million bid for him – an amount that will eclipse the £42.5 million that the club paid for Mesut Ozil.

In fact, Wenger is confident that the Gunners will be able to announce the Frenchman’s signing as early as next week. It now remains to be seen if the aforementioned figure is enough for Arsenal to land Lacazette, as he gets closer to sealing a summer switch to the Emirates.
