Marcelo is reportedly set to follow Cristiano Ronaldo out of the Santiago Bernabeu if the Portugal captain leaves Real Madrid in the summer.

According to a report in Spanish publication Don Balon, Cristiano Ronaldo’s potential departure from the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer transfer window could see another key man leave Real Madrid. Marcelo could push for a summer exit should the Portugal captain call it quits with Los Blancos.

Marcelo has spent practically his entire senior career at Real Madrid, having moved to the Spanish capital in 2007 as an 18-year-old. In over ten years since then, the Brazilian left-back has taken his career to heights that only a few manage to.

He has been widely regarded as one of the best left-backs in the world for several years now, and has laid his hands on every trophy there is to win at the club level with Los Blancos. And even though he’s still only 29, Marcelo is considered as a veteran at the Santiago Bernabeu, having amassed over 400 appearances for the club.

2016/17 was a highly fruitful campaign for Marcelo as he won the La Liga and Champions League double with Real Madrid. On a personal level the player’s playmaking abilities came to the fore, as he bagged 3 goals and 14 assists in 47 matches across all competitions.

However, trouble seems to be brewing in the paradise that is Real Madrid. Cristiano Ronaldo’s future with Los Blancos is mired in heavy uncertainty after reports emerged last week that the Portuguese forward is desperate to depart from the Bernabeu in the summer.

And Ronaldo’s possible exit from the club could spark the ouster of Marcelo as well, who has put his foot down to say that he will follow the Portugal captain out of Bernabeu. The Brazil international has forged an excellent partnership with Ronaldo on the field and off it, the two are close friends as well.

Marcelo, thus, cannot contemplate a future at the Bernabeu if Ronaldo isn’t there either, as per the report. This is set to put Real Madrid in an even more precarious situation. Should Marcelo leave though, the soon-to-be-signed Theo Hernandez could be fast tracked to a regular role in the first-team setup.

Real Madrid, however, would be keen on retaining the services of Ronaldo as well as Marcelo ahead of a crucial 2017/18 campaign in which they will look to win the Champions League for the third season running.
