Liverpool have reportedly turned down an offer worth £10.5 million for Alberto Moreno from Napoli.
According to a report in the Daily Mirror, Napoli have had a bid worth £10.5 million for Alberto Moreno rejected by Liverpool. The Reds are still willing to sell the Spanish left-back in the summer transfer window but are holding out for a higher transfer fee for him.
Moreno moved to Liverpool from Sevilla in the summer of 2014 and quickly established himself as a regular in the first-team setup under Brendan Rodgers. The Spaniard, though, has struggled for form during his time at Anfield and Rodgers’s dismissal as the Reds’ boss ended up coinciding in him losing his place in the starting lineup.
In the recently concluded campaign, Moreno played second fiddle to veteran midfielder, who was deployed as the makeshift left-back by Jurgen Klopp – a clear indication that the Spaniard does not match up to the standards required by the Liverpool manager in his first-team plans.
As a result, Moreno managed to make just 18 appearances across all competitions for Liverpool in 2016/17. Ahead of next season, though, Klopp is eager to make reinforcements across the park in order to prepare a squad fit enough to compete in the Champions League.
Defence, and left-back in particular, remains one of the positions he is looking to strengthen by injecting fresh blood into it, with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon, Andrew Robertson and Josh Tymon reportedly the options being considered.
Moreno is, thus, set to become surplus to requirements at the Merseyside club and a summer departure from Anfield looks likely. The club that is showing the most interest in securing his services is Napoli, who have lodged an official bid worth £10.5 million for the 24-year-old.
At San Paolo, the future of the Faouzi Ghoulam is up in the air, with the electric Algerian eyeing a summer exit. Thus, Maurizio Sarri has delved into the transfer market in order to land a like for like replacement, and he has set his sights on Moreno who, at 24, still has a lot of scope for improvement.
Liverpool, however, are eager to recoup the £13 million they paid to land Moreno in 2014 and are, hence, holding out for the amount. It now remains to be seen if Napoli are willing to shell out the aforementioned figure to secure Moreno’s services in the summer.
