Mesut Ozil set to sign bumper new long-term deal with Arsenal

German playmaker Mesut Ozil is reportedly set to sign a bumper new long-term deal with Arsenal.

According to a report in The Sun, Mesut Ozil is set to extend his stay at the Emirates as he is ready to sign a new long-term contract with Arsenal. The German playmaker has been offered a whopping £280,000-a-week deal by the North London club.

Ozil has been a key figure in Arsene Wenger’s first-team squad ever since Arsenal shelled out a record £42.5 million transfer fee to sign him from Real Madrid in the summer of 2013. In the four seasons that have followed, the player has played an instrumental role in Arsenal’s fortunes.

The aforementioned was true in 2016/17 as well, as Ozil endured a lull in form for large parts of the campaign before a late flourish saw him end the season with 12 goals and 14 assists in 44 appearances across all competitions.

The underwhelming campaign notwithstanding, though, Ozil still remains a vital component in Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans at the Emirates. Arsenal, therefore, have been valiantly trying to agree on a new deal with the Germany international for several months, with his current contract set to expire in a year’s time.

However, the North Londoners have faced nothing but disappointment in their bid to reach an agreement on a renewal, with their failure to qualify for next season’s Champions League believed to have worsened their position.

While certain reports had indicated that Ozil had been holding out for more than what the Gunners had been willing to offer him, the player himself had previously indicated that he more clarity on the future of manager Arsene Wenger before signing a new deal with the club.

Wenger’s position at the Emirates cleared up earlier this week after he reached an agreement with Arsenal on a new two-year deal. And it now looks like Ozil is set to follow in his manager’s footsteps by putting pen to paper on a new contract with the club.

The report suggests that Arsenal’s latest offer would see Ozil double his wages, with a £280,000-a-week deal on the table. And despite the player asking for wages worth £350,000 a week instead, he is now ready to settle on a lesser deal instead.

It is unclear if Ozil has agreed on the aforementioned £280,000 per week deal, or if some other figure has been agreed on. Either way, Arsenal’s summer seems to be starting off on the right track, and they would now hope to reach an agreement on an extension with Alexis Sanchez as well.
