Liverpool are reportedly ready to reignite interest in Borussia Dortmund superstar Mario Gotze in case Philippe Coutinho leaves the club for Barcelona.
According to a TransferMarketWeb report, Liverpool are looking to reignite interest in Borussia Dortmund superstar Mario Gotze.
The rumours linking Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona have been gathering pace as the summer transfer window draws near. And Jurgen Klopp is looking for a move for his former protege in case the Brazilian ends up leaving.
Mario Gotze was labelled as the Golden Boy of his generation as the German impressed everyone with his skills at Dortmund before making the controversial move to Bayern Munich. While he did achieve success with the Bavarians, the player returned to Borussia Dortmund under Thomas Tuchel.
This season has been a troublesome one for the player, with only 16 appearances in total – thanks in part to a rare metabolic disorder – something that has kept him out for the majority of the campaign. However, the player is well into treatment and is expected to return as soon as the doctors clear him for action.
Liverpool’s talisman has truly been Coutinho in every sense of the word. The player has dazzled the fans with his skills. However, his performances have drawn the interest of Barcelona, in particular – a club Coutinho holds in high regard and is expected to agree to a move if they came calling.

All signs point towards a potential summer exit for Coutinho, which would leave Klopp with a gaping hole to fill in his attack. And the German manager is looking to resume his efforts to bring Mario Gotze to Anfield to serve as the Brazilian’s replacement.
While Gotze may not be as flashy as Coutinho, the player can certainly get the job done, both in terms of creating chances and getting on the end of them – The FIFA World Cup 2014 final being an evidence towards the same.
The Reds can easily use a portion of Coutinho’s potential sale proceeds to bankroll a move for Gotze – one that would reunite him with the manager that aided largely, his development into the global superstar he has managed to become.
Dortmund, though, may not be too keen to listen to offers for the 24-year-old, especially after bringing him back to the club from Bayern Munich. A prospect, though, to join his former mentor at a club as iconic as Liverpool might tempt Gotze to take the plunge.
It sure is expected to be a busy summer at Anfield and we may just see Gotze arrive to mitigate the effect of Coutinho’s potential departure.
