Transfer News: Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney set for summer exit with host of Premier League clubs interested

Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is likely to depart in the summer amid interest from other English clubs.

According to Sky Sports, Manchester United are expected to part ways with their captain Wayne Rooney in the summer as a host of Premier League clubs and overseas sides are interested in securing his services.

The 31-year-old has been a divisive figure among the United fans as there are a bunch of the Old Trafford faithful that want nothing to do whatsoever with their club captain, and want him gone in the summer.

However, for some, he is the glue that holds the team together, and after winning every trophy there is to win at the club, he has already achieved legendary status at the club. To cap it all off, he is also the leading goal scorer in Manchester United’s history.

The recently concluded 2016/17 season saw Rooney start in the least amount of games for the club, and that is expected given his age. He is clearly a shadow of his prolific best, and has slowed down considerably over the years.

While Jose Mourinho’s side possess a plethora of pacey attacking options, it’s getting increasingly difficult for the Englishman to cope up with the players around. Mourinho has opted against playing Rooney in a deeper position, and has seen him struggle with his back towards the goal.

Chelsea captain John Terry was given a wonderful send-off in his last game as a Blues player and was also handed a guard of honour by his teammates after being subbed off in the 26th minute.

It’s only fair, that after all the selfless performances Rooney has put in for Manchester United, that he deserves a similar farewell. Mourinho stated that he wants to keep hold of his club captain in the summer, but the decision is all down to the player.

It is understood that a number of Premier League sides are interested in signing the United attacker, but are unlikely to match his staggering wages that he earns at Old Trafford. His former club Everton are also keen on a reunion with Rooney.

In fact, manager Ronald Koeman has admitted that he would love to bring the player back to Goodison Park, and Rooney himself is open to moving to Everton.

The Chinese Super League, with its heavy financial might may also prove to be a good option for Rooney. Due to the government backing, the clubs there can afford to offer Rooney more than the reported £300,000-per-week that he is earning at Manchester United.

It now remains to be seen where the veteran striker heads off to in the summer as a departure from Manchester United looms large.
