AC Milan are targeting Real Madrid’s young midfielder Mateo Kovacic for a summer move to the Seria-A club.
According to a report by Don Balon, Mateo Kovacic is being pursued by AC Milan as they want the Croatian to strengthen their midfield. The Italian giants have been trying to sign Kovacic for quite some time now and are reportedly prepared to up their bid in order to land the midfielder.
Mateo Kovacic has not enjoyed too much playing time this season. However, he has put up brilliant performances whenever called up to start in the wake of injury and fitness issues to other midfielders available at Zinedine Zidane’s disposal.
He took up the responsibility and did not leave any room for disappointment. It is probably his performances in that situation which attracted the attention of AC Milan. Earlier, there were also reports of AS Roma being keen on signing the youngster.
AC Milan are looking to sign flurry of players this summer in a quest to return to the top echelons of Italian and European football – aided by the financial prowess of their new Chinese owners. Hence, price shouldn’t be an issue.
Kovacic is very young and can grow with the years to become in a key player in the future. He has notched up 38 appearances in total this season – 26 of them coming in La Liga.
The 23-year-old has played in almost every position in the midfield, replacing Modric when he was injured and occupying Casemiro’s position when he had to rest – a testament to his versatility.
Despite being loaded with talent and being a part of Real Madrid for two seasons now, Kovacic has not been able to establish himself. A move to another club will be the best bet for him since his skills need to honed further – something which needs regular football.
Meanwhile, AS Roma are also rumoured to be eyeing Kovacic for a while now. The Italian club have been searching for an able replacement for Radja Naninggolan, who is likely to leave and join a Premier League club next season. Thus, Kovacic seems a good alternative to replace him in the midfield.
AS Roma will play Champions League football next season and they need to sign players who can help elevate their performances in the coveted league. Compared to AC Milan, Roma might not be able to offer the same financial package to Real or Kovacic, but the Croatian will be able to play Champions League football in Rome.
