Manchester United are likely to sign Paris Saint-Germain’s Brazilian defender Marquinhos for a sum of £60million

According to a report by Sport Espanyol, Paris Saint-Germain are ready to open talks with Manchester United over a deal for Marquinhos.

Marquinhos joined PSG from AS Roma back in 2013, and he has been touted as one of the top defending prospects ever since.

It comes as no surprise that PSG were so hesitant to allow Marquinhos to leave. Along with Marco Verratti and Adrien Rabiot, he is seen as one of the most crucial members of their current squad.

Last year, PSG had rejected Barcelona’s offer of £42million for Marquinhos, but now United are ready to submit a bid worth £60million which the French champions are ready to accept.

The Brazilian defender’s current deal with PSG will still have two years remaining at the end of the season, but both parties have failed to successfully negotiate an extension. To make the most out of his market value right now, PSG have agreed to let the 23-year-old go.

Marquinhos was struggling to get enough playing time last season, but he has become much more of a regular player after David Luiz’s departure to Chelsea.

Marquinhos has cemented himself as a first-team member at PSG this season and has started 22 of their 31 Ligue 1 games and established a successful partnership with compatriot Thiago Silva.

However, the duo were mercilessly targeted after being subjected to a 6-1 defeat by Barcelona in the Champions League back in March. Despite that setback, Marquinhos is still regarded as one of the best young central defenders across Europe.

A solid defender like Marquinhos will be a welcome addition for any team, but unfortunately for Barcelona, PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi is not in favour of letting one of his side’s star players join a Champions League rival club.

This decision might come as a blow to the La Liga side who have been trying to sign Marquinhos for a long time. However, they have lost the bargain now and it looks like Jose Mourinho will benefit from Marquinhos’ services.

United’s need to sign a defender blew wide open especially after Marcos Rojo became their third centre-half to fall prey to injury within a month.

Mourinho has been looking for quality options to strengthen his back-line ever since. It was earlier reported that he wants to get former Manchester United youth player Michael Keane back to the club, who is currently playing for Burnley.

The Portuguese manager is assessing his options as he is keen to find an ideal central defensive partner for Eric Bailly, as he gets ready to start his second season in charge of Manchester United.
