Premier League giants Chelsea and Arsenal are interested in Lech Poznan’s Polish striker, Dawid Kownacki

According to a report in the Daily Mail, the cross-town Premier League rivals are closely monitoring the 20-year-old Lech Poznan attacker, and have reportedly sent scouts to watch the young striker in recent weeks, who is being hailed as the ‘New Lewandowski’ for his goalscoring exploits.

Lewandowski, now arguably the world’s best striker, also spent some of his formative years in Poland, spending 2 seasons with Lech Poznan between 2008 to 2010, where he would score 41 goals in 82 appearances and help them win the Ekstraklasa, The Polish Cup and the Polish Super Cup.

At only 20 years of age, Kownacki has already made over 100 appearances for the Polish giants and in this season, he has scored 12 goals in 29 appearances across all competitions, helping them to the final of the Polish Cup where they lost to Arka Gdynia.

His 9 League goals have helped his side to 3rd place in the Ekstraklasa, only 4 points behind current leaders Legia Warsaw with 6 games to go and Kownacki, who can also play on either wing, is currently enjoying the most prolific season of his fledgling career.

So it comes as no surprise that some of Europe’s biggest clubs have taken an interest in the youngster. Besides Arsenal and Chelsea, current Premier League Champions Leicester City have also been rumoured to be interested in acquiring the services of the versatile forward.

With the U21-European Championships coming up in the summer in his native Poland, Kownacki will have a chance to further impress scouts coming to watch the tournament and add more names to hi list of suitors and more clubs could be vying for his signature in the coming months.

With Diego Costa’s future at Chelsea uncertain and Arsenal clearly in need of reinforcements up fronts, both clubs will surely be in the market for a top quality striker but at this stage, Kownacki, despite all his talent doesn’t seem to be the answer.

If either club were to acquire him, they would likely send him out on loan for a season. Chelsea, given their policy of handling their youth, almost surely would. However, he is certainly a talent to watch out for the future and careful nurturing will be required if he is to grow into his full potential.

With correct guidance, career choices and the right amount of hard work, there is no reason why he can’t one day fill Lewandowski’s boots in the near future.
