Real Madrid have reportedly joined the race to sign Benjamin Mendy from AS Monaco in the summer.

According to a report in Tribal Football, Real Madrid have set their sights on AS Monaco left-back Benjamin Mendy over a move in the summer transfer window. The French defender is also being monitored by Manchester United and Manchester City.

Mendy’s stock has risen considerably this season, having been one of the many success stories for Monaco in their sensational campaign. The Principality club are favourites to win the Ligue 1 title ahead of Paris Saint-Germain and are also in the UEFA Champions League semifinals.

Mendy has been one of the mainstays in the side, making an impact in defence as well as attack. The 22-year-old has played 36 games across all competitions for Monaco this season, scoring one goal while providing an incredible 11 assists to go with his solid performances on the left side of defence.

And he has been just one of the many Monaco players who have attracted attention from the who’s who of European football. In fact, Manchester United and Manchester City have both registered an interest in signing him in the summer, but Real Madrid have now emerged as the latest suitor.

Manchester United manager, Jose Mourinho is eager to sign a top quality left-back in the summer following Luke Shaw’s struggles this season. The likes of Daley Blind, Marcos Rojo and Darmian have failed to impress much in the Englishman’s absence, and thus Mendy has been identified as a target.

Their arch-rivals, City too are in need to sign a left-back with Gael Clichy and Aleksandar Kolarov both being on the wrong side of 30 and past their best years. With Pep Guardiola keen to strengthen his defence ahead of next season, Mendy has become a viable option for him to consider.

However, Real Madrid have now joined the race to sign him as well, with Zinedine Zidane eyeing the addition of a left-back in the summer transfer window. Los Blancos are believed to be laying the succession plans for Marcelo, with Theo Hernandez reported to be their top target.

However, Barcelona are interested in signing Hernandez as well, and are believed to be leading that particular race. Thus, Real Madrid have turned their attention towards Mendy, keeping him as a contingency plan in case they fail to land the Atletico Madrid prodigy.

Thus, a three-way battle seems to be setting up to secure the services of Mendy in the summer. Chelsea and Arsenal have also been previously linked with the youngster and it remains to be seen if they make it an all-out transfer war for the Frenchman.
