Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a summer swoop for Real Betis goalkeeper Antonio Adan
Spanish outlet Estadio Deportivo have reported that Liverpool are interested in signing Antonio Adan from Real Betis in the summer transfer window. The Reds are ready to make a move to land him, with the former Real Madrid goalkeeper believed to be keen on a switch to Anfield as well.
Adan progressed through the ranks at boyhood club Real Madrid before making his debut for the first team in 2010. However, he never quite managed to become a regular at the Santiago Bernabeu, eventually leaving Cagliari before signing for Real Betis a year later.
Now in his third season with the Beticos, and Adan has become a key figure at the Villamarin. In fact, his superlative performances between the sticks have been a key reason that Betis have managed to secure their Spanish top flight status for the second consecutive season.
Adan has started every game in La Liga for Betis in the current campaign, keeping 10 clean sheets while making an incredible 3.06 saves per game. And the Spaniard feels that the time has come for him to test himself at a higher level, as per the report.
That could happen at Liverpool, who are showing an interest in signing him in the summer. The Reds have been poor at the back all season long, with defensive lapses as well as goalkeeping blunders meaning only Watford have a worse defensive record them them among teams in the Top 10 in the Premier League.
Goalkeepers, in particular, have been highly unreliable this season, with both Simon Mignolet and summer signing Loris Karius often being prone to errors. The two have conceded 42 goals and managed to keep just 8 clean sheets between them – hardly a decent enough return.
With Liverpool aspiring to contest for the title, defensive problems are one that need to addressed in the summer, as a result of which goalkeeper has emerged as a priority reinforcement position for Jurgen Klopp.
The likes of Joe Hart, Kasper Schmeichel and Jordan Pickford, among others have already been linked with Liverpool, but it looks like the Merseyside club have turned their attention towards Adan, whose performances suggest that he could become an upgrade on both Mignolet and Karius.
The report states that the 29-year-old is keen to link up with Klopp at Anfield next season, and a summer move is likely. Adan still has more than two years left on his deal with Betis, and he has a release clause worth €8 million in that contract.
Liverpool, though, are confident that they can lower than amount to €6 million by including bonuses in the deal. It now remains to be seen if the Merseyside club can now manage to secure Adan’s services with Klopp eager to land a goalkeeper in the summer.
