Liverpool and Manchester City have reportedly joined the race to sign Serge Aurier from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer
French publication Les Parisien have reported that Liverpool and Manchester City have registered an interest in signing Serge Aurier in the summer transfer window. Manchester United are also closely following the PSG right-back.
Aurier has endured a topsy turvy spell with PSG, ever since he made the move to the Parc des Princes from Toulouse in 2014. While the Ivorian is considered to be one of the best right-backs in France, if not in Europe, he has often been a controversial figure, which has restricted his game time to an extent.
However, despite his various run-ins, the Ivorian continues to be an influential figure for PSG, particularly in attack, having provided 5 assists in 29 appearances across all competitions. And while he is a typically modern fullback with his marauding runs on the right flank, he has made an impact at the back as well.
As a result, Aurier has become a highly sought-after defender among some of the biggest clubs in Europe, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both showing an interest in him.
However, as per the latest reports, the 24-year-old has been attracting interest from England, with Manchester United, Manchester City and Liverpool all being linked with him.
Manchester United currently have seen Antonio Valencia make the right-back position his own this season, but Matteo Darmian has not been able to impress Jose Mourinho. As a result, Jose Mourinho is believed to be in search of a top quality right-back to bolster his options in the summer.
At Manchester City, Pep Guardiola’s side have been poor at the back, with an ageing defence not making things easy for the Spaniard. Pablo Zabaleta and Bacary Sagna are his current options, and with neither able to match the heights of previous seasons, a right-back has emerged as a priority for the City boss.
Meanwhile, Nathaniel Clyne has been a force to reckon with, in nearly two seasons with Liverpool, but Jurgen Klopp has no recognised options to choose from beyond the England international. Young defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has impressed in a few chances that have been afforded to him, but it looks like Klopp is on the lookout for more.
Recent reports claimed that Manchester United have agreed a deal in principle to sign Aurier in the summer transfer window, but with City and Liverpool emerging as suitors for the PSG right-back, things could change in the coming weeks.
The Les Parisien report states that it is looking highly likely that Aurier will leave PSG at the end of the season, and it now remains to be seen if either City or Liverpool can persuade him to snub Manchester United to join them instead.
