Manchester United are reportedly plotting a £50 million summer raid on Borussia Dortmund for French wonderkid Ousmane Dembele.
According to a report in The Sun, Manchester United are lining up a £50 million summer swoop for Borussia Dortmund forward Ousmane Dembele. The teenage prodigy is also being closely followed by Liverpool.
Dembele has established himself as one of the most promising young forwards in football today, after enjoying a stunning debut campaign with Borussia Dortmund in 2016/17. Still all of 19, he is already a regular in the first team setup at Westfalenstadion after making the move from Rennes last summer.
Dembele has played an incredible 41 times for Dortmund this season, and has been the team’s creative force, assisting 17 goals in addition to himself finding the back of the net 8 times. These numbers are incredible figures for a player who is still in his teens and it is no surprise why he is rated so highly.
As Dembele’s stock continues to rise, Dembele is starting to attract attention from some of the best clubs across Europe. Barcelona and Liverpool have been heavily linked with the French youngster in recent weeks, and now Manchester United have entered the mix as well.
In fact, Barcelona have been long-time admirers of Dembele’s talents and have continued to monitor his progress all through this season. And after being snubbed by the teenager last summer, the Catalan club are planning to offer him more assurances of a regular place in the first team setup at Camp Nou.
Liverpool, though, can do one better as Dembele has the potential to become one of the first names on Jurgen Klopp’s team sheet at Anfield. The Reds boss has been often criticised for the lack of depth in his squad, and a top quality attacking player is a priority for him.
Dembele could also become a regular at Manchester United. The Portuguese tactician is believed to be looking for attacking reinforcements for the summer, and Dembele could be one of his most high profile targets yet.
The 19-year-old French forward has shown, with his pin point crossing, that he is one of the most prolific playmakers in Europe currently, and his pace makes him a deadly foil for the likes of Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan to work with.
However, Dembele would not come cheap, with the report stating that a bid of at least £50 million will have to be lodged in order to prise the player away from the Signal Iduna Park. In addition to that, the suitors will also have to persuade Dembele to move after just one highly successful season with Dortmund.
That could prove to be a tall order, as Dembele seems to be enjoying his role as a regular starter in Thomas Tuchel’s side, and having previously admitted that regular first team football is his ultimate desire, it looks unlikely that he would end his journey as a Dortmund player just yet.
