Real Madrid are reportedly ready to offload Croatian midfielder Luka Modric in the summer transfer window.
Spanish publication Don Balon have reported that Real Madrid are prepared to put midfield maestro Luka Modric up for sale when the summer transfer window opens in June.
Modric joined Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur in a €30 million deal in 2012, and after enduring a challenging first season at the Santiago Bernabeu, he has gone on to become one of the most vital cog for the Spanish heavyweights.
Having recovered from a slow start in the Spanish capital, the 31-year-old has become one of the most integral figures in Real Madrid’s success in the last four seasons, having established himself as one of the best midfielders in the world.
The Croatian midfielder doesn’t quite boast of big numbers having played more than 200 times for Real Madrid, with just 11 goals and 31 assists to show for his efforts, but his influence goes far beyond that, as he more often than not dictates the pace of the game from the centre of the park, threading key passes to split defences wide open.
So, it’s easy to see just how important a member Modric has become in the first team picture at Real Madrid ever since moving to the Santiago Bernabeu. But, it looks like his journey with Los Blancos could soon be coming to an end.
That is because, if the report by Don Balon is anything to go by, Real Madrid have put Modric up for sale after it was deemed that his career gradually starting to go downhill, following a poor outing against Alaves on the weekend.
Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez has, thus, decided that he will let go of the influential midfielder if he receives the right offer from a club in the summer. Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane also believes that in the likes of Isco and Mateo Kovacic, he has ready made replacements for Modric within his squad.
Modric only signed a new deal with Real Madrid earlier this season that tied him up at the Santiago Bernabeu till 2020, and the news that he could set to be offloaded in the summer only months into the renewal does come as a genuine shock.
It now remains to be seen if Real Madrid indeed let go of their midfield maestro come June. If that does happen, several clubs could make a beeline to sign Modric, as he still has a lot to offer even though his best years may already be behind him.
