Bayern Munich are reportedly leading the race to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid in the summer.
Reliable Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has reported that Bayern Munich are first in line to sign Antoine Griezmann from Atletico Madrid in the summer. The French forward has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United.
Griezmann has evolved into one of the finest players in the world in the last couple of years, following a strong 2015/16 with Atletico Madrid with a superb Euros as he finished as the top scorer a tournament. He capped off his best senior year by finishing third in the race for the Ballon d’Or.
He has continued his fine form into 2016/17 as well, scoring 22 goals while providing 11 assists in 40 matches in all competitions. And in what has been a see-saw season for Atletico, Griezmann has been one of the few shining lights.
Surely enough, he has been rising in popularity, and has become one of the hottest properties in Europe. In fact, the likes of Inter Milan, Arsenal and Real Madrid have all been linked with the 26-year-old, but Manchester United have appeared to be in the driver’s seat to sign him in the summer.
Zlatan Ibrahimovic has done the bulk of the goalscoring for the Red Devils this season, and there is a need to sign a genuinely potent attacking player in the summer. Griezmann fits the bill perfectly, having been one of the top scorers in Europe in the last two seasons.
Recent reports have claimed that Manchester United are on their way to solving their problems in front of goal, as they are “on the verge” of completing the deal to sign Griezmann. However, it now looks like Bayern Munich have taken the lead to race ahead in pursuit of the French international.
Bayern boss Carlo Ancelotti has a wealth of top class options up front, with the likes of Thomas Muller, Arjen Robben, Douglas Costa, Franck Ribery, Kingsley Coman and Bundesliga top scorer, Robert Lewandowski to choose from.
So, it will be interesting to see where Griezmann fits into Ancelotti’s plans, but he is a player who will certainly add a lot of value to Bayern’s attack with his versatility and deadly eye for goal.
However, with Manchester United still hot on the trails of the player, they will surely not go down without a fight. For now, though, Bayern seem to have taken the lead in the race to sign Griezmann and it remains to be seen how things develop in the months to come.
