Liverpool are monitoring Timo Werner and are lining up a possible summer move for the RB Leipzig forward, as per reports.
According to a report by Daily Mail, Liverpool have registered an interest in signing Timo Werner, having had the RB Leipzig striker watched for over a year.
Werner has been rated as one of the most promising talents in German football for some years now, having rapidly progressed through the ranks at Vfb Stuttgart before establishing himself in the senior setup at the tender age of 17.
In three years with the Stuttgart first team, he racked up more than 100 appearances in all competitions, even before he had turned 20. His impressive performances then earned Werner a move to Bundesliga newcomers RB Leipzig, and he has been an instant success for the East German club.
That is because, in less than a season with Leipzig, the 21-year-old has already equalled his goal tally from Stuttgart, having scored 14 goals in 23 Bundesliga games; he also has 6 assists to his name. Much of the credit also goes to Leipzig boss, Ralph Hasenhuttl who moved Werner to a more central position.
The Germany under-21 international is currently on a hot scoring streak, having scored 11 goals in his last 14 games, and his stellar performances have earned him an admirer in Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool have, in fact, constantly monitored his progress over the course of the season.
The report states that Klopp is prioritising the addition of a striker, a left-back and a centre-back in the summer, and has identified Werner to solve one of his problems.
In fact, Liverpool have also been credited with interest in Julian Brandt, Riyad Mahrez, Demarai Gray and Hakim Ziyech in recent weeks, but Werner offers the best solution.
That is because Werner is used to playing in a system that is similar to that of Klopp’s high-energy Gegenpressing game at Leipzig. Additionally, the versatility to play as a striker as well as a winger also makes him one of the most viable options for the Liverpool boss to consider.
With Klopp being heavily criticised for his reluctance to not address the issue of the lack of depth in his squad, the possible addition of Werner could just be the tonic the Liverpool fans have been asking for. A potential stumbling block in the Reds’ pursuit of Werner could be Champions League qualification.
With Leipzig set to qualify for Europe’s biggest club competition following their surprising run to second in the table, failure to finish in the Top 4 could see Liverpool fail in their pursuit of Werner as well. It now remains to be seen how things develop in the coming weeks, as Liverpool continue to monitor the youngster.
