Manchester United are planning a stunning double swoop for two Real Madrid superstars
According to Don Balon, The Red Devils will attempt to sign star midfielder Toni Kroos as well as long-time Mourinho favourite Raphael Varane from Los Blancos this summer. They claim that Mourinho already attempted to sign Varane while at Chelsea and will renew his interest in the Frenchman and his teammate this summer.
Don Balon also state that Toni Kroos is unsettled in Madrid despite having only signed an extension on his contract in October keeping him at the club until 2022 and that Mourinho will attempt to take advantage of this.
Raphael Varane thrived under Mourinho when the Portuguese tactician was manager at Real Madrid, and Don Balon claim that the Frenchman will be tempted to work with Mourinho once again and have a more pronounced role at Manchester United than he currently does at Real Madrid.
The Frenchman has been a regular starter in Zinedine Zidane’s side this season having made 18 starts in the La Liga, but has come in for some criticism recently from Real Madrid fans for his performances.
Given that he is only 23 and a favourite of Mourinho’s, it is no surprise the Manchester United manager is interested in signing the player. Varane has immense potential and could form a fine partnership with Eric Bailly in central defence for years to come.
It was previously reported that Manchester United would ask for Raphael Varane to be included in a deal for David De Gea, but Don Balon claim that the Spaniard is now unsure if he wants the move to Madrid as they are facing internal issues, and that United will attempt to sign Varane in any case.
Toni Kroos, meanwhile, has been linked with Manchester United several times in the past. David Moyes tried and failed to sign the German superstar during his ill-fated spell at Old Trafford, and Kroos was linked with the Red Devils even before he moved to the La Liga giants.
With Michael Carrick set to end his Manchester United career at the end of the season, Kroos would represent a perfect replacement for the English midfielder. His distribution and ability on the ball would be a great addition to Manchester United’s midfield and at 27, Kroos still has time on his side to form a partnership with Paul Pogba for years.
Mourinho has previously stated that he will buy 3 or 4 specialist players in the summer and Varane and Kroos represent exactly that. As United look to build a side that can dominate Europe and England for years to come, it definitely looks like it is going to be an interesting summer.
