Liverpool have reignited their interest in Mario Gotze and are lining up a summer move for the Borussia Dortmund midfielder, as per reports.
The Daily Mirror have reported that Liverpool have opened talks with Borussia Dortmund over a move for Mario Gotze in the summer transfer window. The Reds have been his long-time admirers and have previously also been in the market for the Germany international.
The last few seasons have been nothing short of a struggle for Mario Gotze. 2014 certainly was memorable for the 24-year-old as he struck the goal that ensured Germany’s win in the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But, at club level, he hasn’t really managed to take his career to the next level.
The move to Bayern was initially successful as he managed to form a regular part of Pep Guardiola’s plans. But, 2015/16 saw his development slow down, as injuries and poor form meant that Gotze played just 14 games for the Bavarian giants, scoring three goals and providing four assists.
With Gotze eager to get regular game time, he sought a move away from the Allianz Arena this past summer, and several clubs made a beeline for his signature. Liverpool were one of these outfits, but Gotze eventually moved back to the Westfalenstadion in a £20 million deal.
However, the return to Borussia Dortmund hasn’t been a fruitful one for Gotze, as he has managed to start just 14 of the 32 games that the Ruhr club has played in all competitions. As a result, his productivity hasn’t been up to the mark either, with just two goals and as many assists to show for his efforts.
Still only 24, though, this isn’t expected to be the end of Gotze’s growth as a footballer at any stretch even if the German midfielder hasn’t managed to reach the heights of his first spell with Dortmund. One person who definitely believes that is Jurgen Klopp, who wants to bring Gotze to Anfield, as per the report.
Gotze blossomed as a promising young footballer at Dortmund under Klopp, and was integral to the Liverpool manager’s side that won back-to-back Bundesliga titles. It now looks like Klopp is eager to take Gotze under his wing again, with Liverpool back in the market for him.
The report states that initial talks for a summer move have already taken place between the parties involved, and Dortmund are believed to be eager to recoup the £20 million they paid to secure his services last summer. The ball seems to be in Liverpool’s court now and it remains to be seen if Klopp can bring his protege to Anfield.
