Real Madrid may reportedly be forced to back out of their chase for David De Gea after learning about the new contract on offer for him from Manchester United
According to Tribal Football, Real Madrid have been left shocked by reports of the staggering contract that Manchester United are going to offer David De Gea and are now considering to back out of making a move to bring him to the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer.
When you talk about the best goalkeepers in the world, there is one name that always comes up in any discussion. That name is David De Gea, the Manchester United number one who has bailed his side out of sticky situations on several occasions.
And while he hasn’t been called into action as frequently as the last three seasons in the current campaign, he continues to prove his value for the Red Devils, making several world-class saves to thwart opposition attackers.
That quality was on display again last weekend against Watford, as although De Gea was largely untroubled in his goal on the evening, he made one breathtaking save off Mauro Zarate’s free kick to ensure he kept a tenth clean sheet in the Premier League this season.
With De Gea being one of the most highly regarded goalkeepers in the world, it goes without saying that several clubs across Europe could do with his services.
Real Madrid are one such club, with Zinedine Zidane eager to add a world class goalkeeper to his side with Keylor Navas and Kiko Casilla failing to impress the Frenchman. And their interest in De Gea isn’t new either, as he looked all set to move to the Santiago Bernabeu in 2015 before failed paperwork scuppered the transfer.
However, several reports across Europe came out earlier this week claiming that Manchester United were preparing to offer a new £300,000-a-week deal to De Gea in order to keep hold of their prized asset. And it looks like that news has left Real Madrid president Florentino Perez stunned, as per the report.
While De Gea seemed to be a priority target for Real Madrid but Perez is now unwilling to match the terms on offer from Manchester United, as that would see the Spain number one earn similar wages as Cristiano Ronaldo and possibly affect the morale at the Bernabeu.
If Real Madrid indeed back out of making a summer move for De Gea, they could move to target number two Thibaut Courtois. And with the Chelsea goalkeeper pushing for a move back to the Spanish capital, this might be a likelier deal for the La Liga leaders.
Juventus are said to be in the race for De Gea as well, and it now remains to be seen if the Bianconeri have also been rocked like Real Madrid, or if they pursue the Spaniard in the summer. But if Manchester United indeed are able to renew terms with De Gea on the reported deal, they could clinch the goalkeeper’s services for next season and beyond.
