Liverpool are reportedly lining up a shock summer swoop for Middlesbrough’s Gaston Ramirez, who was heavily linked with a January move to Leicester City
According to a TuttoMercatoWeb exclusive, Middlesbrough attacker Gaston Ramirez is a shock summer target for Liverpool. The Uruguayan had handed in a transfer request in an attempt to force through a January move to Leicester City, but Karanka held on to the attacker as Boro find themselves in the relegation battle.
But Liverpool’s interest may be too much to handle for the manager and the former Real Madrid number two may have to give in to Gaston’s wish of a move away from the Riverside Stadium.
Gaston Ramirez has been plying his trade in English football for more than four years now. His arrival at Southampton was received with much hype but he failed to establish himself and, after a loan spell at Hull City, the Uruguayan moved to Middlesbrough on a free transfer.
And he has been influential this season, with 2 goals and 3 assists in 17 Premier League appearances. However, he has been eyeing a move away just months into his Middlesbrough career. The 26-year-old was thought to be set for a January exit, with Leicester City the prime favourites to land the Uruguayan.
Liverpool have had their own share of transfer market stories in January. The Reds failed to add to their thin squad at Anfield in the winter transfer market and their poor form since the turn of the year has not done them any favours.
Klopp, though, is intent to rectify the failures of the January transfer window and is already looking to shortlist his arrival and departures for the summer. Gaston already seems to have one foot out of the door and could be heading towards Anfield come summer.
Gaston would surely be able to settle in well at Anfield, with similar faces in Adam Lallana, Dejan Lovren and Nathaniel Clyne from his time at Southampton. Liverpool’s recruits from the south coast have done wonders for the club, with the latest being Sadio Mane.
And even though Gaston Ramirez is no more a Southampton player, he could very well turn out to be another former Saints player to thrive for Liverpool, if the deal does happen.
