Liverpool target Quincy Promes has ruled out a switch to Anfield, insisting the thought of moving away from Spartak Moscow never crossed his mind.
Netherlands international Quincy Promes has addressed the speculation regarding his links with Liverpool, insisting that he will not be making a move to the Merseyside club because he believes he’s going in the right direction with Spartak Moscow.
Liverpool are rumoured to be in search of an attacking reinforcement this month, and have thus been linked with several players. Christian Pulisic was believed to be a top target for Jurgen Klopp, but with the American forward renewing his deal with Borussia Dortmund, the Reds reportedly turned their attention towards Quincy Promes.
Speaking to Russian publication Sport Express, Promes said that he never thought about leaving Spartak Moscow: “I never thought about other clubs. Never. Some things were said, but I do not know about that. I just know that I play for Spartak, and people who really know me understand this.”
Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum also urged the club hierarchy to bring Promes to Anfield. But Promes, while saying that the Liverpool midfielder is a close friend, claimed that the two have never talked about the 25-year-old making the move to England.
He continued: “Yes, he says he wants me [at Liverpool], because he likes me as a player. That’s what he said. I talked with him, of course. But it wasn’t about Liverpool. We’re just friends. I repeat: everyone who knows me understands what I think, and fans of Spartak know and remember what I said.”
Netherlands international Quincy Promes has come a long way since a troubled start to his professional career, when he was thrown out of Ajax’s academy for indiscipline. A move to Russia has only seen him rise to prominence as an exciting young talent.
Promes has scored 37 goals in 72 games with the Russian club, finishing as the club’s top scorer in two of the past three seasons. He has again been superb for Spartak this season, hitting the back of the net six times so far, while assisting a further seven goals in 17 appearances for his side.
Promes’ exploits for Spartak have definitely caught the eye, and Liverpool were rumoured to be making a final push to land their target man, with the Russian outfit placing a £25 million price tag on his head.
However Promes’ comments should put to bed any more rumours of a potential January move to Liverpool, with the Dutch winger visibly happy at Spartak Moscow.
